Freshman Days

HOW DO THEY WORK?

Darwin Show Jumping Club holds freshman days throughout the year, particularly at the start of the year when there are many combinations that are new (or just a bit rusty!). They provide a casual, friendly atmosphere for everyone to get out there and start jumping, some riders completing a course for the first time, and others facing their green horse at a wall for the first time.

Freshman Days provide a great opportunity for members to use the club's equipment, including fillers and walls, and allows the horses to experience the atmosphere of competition with other horses. Plus is makes for a good opportunity to socialise -- horses and people alike! So, how does the day work?

  • Set up for Freshman Days occurs either the night before the event -- usually a Friday night at about 530pm - or on the morning of the event. All those who wish to ride at the Freshman Day are asked to help set up because of course many hands make light work. Those who cannot make it to set up are required to stay for the pack up at the conclusion of the day.
  • Freshman Days start at 9am
  • Entry to Freshman Days are taken on the day, with the Show Secretary taking nominations and monies from about 830am. Entrants pay $5 for 2 rounds at their chosen height. (eg 65cm)
  • There is no draw, however to keep the day running efficiently riders should be prompt entering the arena for their turn. Riders may elect to ride their two rounds consecutively, or to leave a few horses between their first and second rounds.
  • Each combination is allowed to ride 3 consecutive heights -- for instance 60cm, 75cm, 80cm -- however riders should keep in mind the fitness of their horse, particularly early in the season.
  • The dress code for Freshman Days is casual dress, i.e. neat polo shirt, buttoned up (absolutely no singlets or tank tops), coloured or beige jodhpurs. All other tack (saddlery, bits etc.) and safety equipment (helmets, boots) to be in accordance with DSJC guidelines/EFA rules.

Freshman Days held during the wet season are always subject to weather conditions. Wet weather cancellations are advised via email and on the website the night before/morning of the event.
